Since the beginning of this century, The Virtual Linguistics Campus (VLC) has been the world's largest e-learning platform for linguistics and language studies. It has offered linguistic courses and course material for theoretical and applied linguistics as well as educational technology. Furthermore, it includes a variety of linguistic tools and all the communicative facilities necessary for successful e-learning. In addition to its more than 70 linguistic courses, the platform now includes new content from the field of literary studies. The first courses in this area have already been launched with great success, and more are currently under construction. With this expansion, we are opening up new intellectual horizons and inviting a broader academic audience to engage with the VLC. As a result of these changes, we changed the name of the VLC. To reflect the growing diversity of our offerings, we adopted this updated name: The Virtual Linguistics and Literature Campus, short VL2C.

Over the years, the content has been authored by more than 75 regular and associated members, assistant professors, research and student assistants plus external contributors from all over the world, among them David Crystal and the late William Labov. The main responsibility, however, lies in the hands of the VL2C project manager, linguist and web-technologist Jürgen Handke  and his Linguistic Engineering Team.

Recently, we have started setting literary and other texts and stories to music. The musical genres range from hard rock via progressive rock to traditional folk genres within world fusion. Help us raise the international profile of this music by following Prof. Handke's "NOMAD Sound Engine" YouTube Channel. There you can listen to the music and, if you wish, embed or link it for free, thereby complying with copyright guidelines. Please support the musical ambitions of the VL2C team by subscribing to the NOMAD Sound Engine channel.

Here are the latest three sound tracks/videos dedicated to the VL2C users of three nations. To see/load all soundtracks use the interactive map.

Meanwhile the VL2C has more than 15,100 VL2C users. The top 5 still are: Germany, The Philippines, The United States, Pakistan and India.

PHP-Security Prolem

von Juergen Handke -

Dear VL2C users,

As you may have heard from the news, there has been a security issue with the PHP programming language. Millions of websites were affected, including the VL2C, which had to be temporarily taken offline as a result. The problem has now (after two days) been resolved. However, as a result, the VL2C is now running as a Moodle 4.5 instance, which has led to some changes in design and functionality.

We are doing our best to resolve any issues that may arise, but we ask for your patience, as some aspects are new to us developers, too.

New VL2C Song

von Juergen Handke -

Dear VL2C Community Members,

We are pleased to present the new VL2C song. It is AI-generated and has been supplemented with blues harp and flute by VL2C Project Manager Jürgen Handke:

We hope you all continue to enjoy the the VL2C offerings and look forward to receiving lots of comments and perhaps a few likes.

Your VL2C Team

VLC112 - A Techn.-Supported Introduction to Linguistics

von Juergen Handke -

The new "Introduction to Linguistics" is ready for self-enrollment! Throughout the course, students will be required to analyze language data from a variety of different languages using modern tools and technolgies where possible in order to develop a feeling for and proficiency in the proper techniques of linguistic analysis. Just self-enroll to VLC112.

Apologies

von Juergen Handke -

From 26 to 29 May 2023, the VLC web server was temporarily unavailable due to maintenance work. We apologise to our community for any problems this may have caused. As of now, the VLC is available again.

Chat GPT

von Juergen Handke -

Currently, the VLC is integrating chat GPT recommendations into its courses. Successively, all guiding questions of the "How to Proceed" sections of all courses will be coupled with a recommendation value (RV) on a scale from 0 = not recommended to 10 = highly recommended. Furthermore, an overall recommendation value for the whole topic, again ranging from 0 to 10 is shown. This means, the higher the RV, the more does the VLC Team recommend to forward the guiding question to chat GPT as a means of additional content support.

Since the VLC has more than 30 courses plus 25 Micro Credentials, the implementation of this new feature will take some time. In the meantime, we apologize for any inconveniencies.
