British English

The main variety of British English is referred to as Received Pronunciation (RP). In RP, we can define a total of 44 phonemes:

The vowel phonemes differ from the other varieties of English, for example from American English, to a relatively large extent.

The consonantal phonemes, by contrast, are almost identical with the other varieties of English, yet, their allophonic realization is different in a number of cases.
