Common Errors

Many beginners in syntax will make a common mistake when faced with NPs such as:

  • the big banana

They will treat big as a complement and construct it as sister to the noun (here: banana). However, big is an adjunct (omission test), so it must be sister to N'. Thus, APs always have to be sisters to N' and not to N.

The N' sister to AP is highlighted on the right.
