The linking between the autosegments on adjacent tiers is defined by a system
of association principles. These were originally defined for the linking between tones and tone-bearing units (vowels):
There is some debate whether dumping and spreading are universal conditions that apply in any language, or, whether they are parameters to be fixed by each language individually.
