Phonetic Planning
At the second stage of the process of linguistic encoding, successive fragments of the surface structure are incrementally translated into a representation that the articulator will have to realize. This phonetic plan is generated via a set of intermediary representations, retrieving plans for individual and for concatenated words.
Formally, the following linguistic notions help to represent the phonetic plan:
- the morphological structure of words
- the syllable
- non-linear phonology
- aspects of connected speech
As a result, a string of 'pronounceable patterns' is generated.
