Tiers
Non-linear phonology proposes that each phonological representation consists of
several layers or tiers. Thus, the representation of phonological phenomena implies
- a horizontal representation of segments
(the content of each tier) - a vertical representation
(the linking between the tiers)
The phonological representation now resembles the score of a song where the notes are on one line and the lyrics on another.
